With the sun setting earlier and earlier, driving my bike to a paved trail in a far-flung suburb just isn’t practical. So my recent bike rides have been closer to home. (Home being Oak Park.)
Here’s what I found.
Elmwood Park’s water works building and impressive reservoir.

In River Forest, a 1928 water pumping station tucked between homes. Yes, this is a pumping station where a 2,100-foot well was sunk.

In Galewood, a Mars chocolate candy factory so big it has its own train station.

Aptly, the station is named Mars.
